Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado on Friday reacted to winning the Nobel Peace Prize, dedicating it to the suffering people of Venezuela and US President Donald Trump. “This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is an encouragement to continue our work,” Machado wrote in a post on X. He emphasized the support he expects to continue to receive from international partners. He further said that we are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the people of Latin America, and the democracies of the world, as our key allies in achieving freedom and democracy.

Machado dedicated the award to his fellow citizens and also expressed his gratitude to US President Donald Trump. She said, “I dedicate this award to President Trump for his decisive support of the suffering people of Venezuela and our cause!” As the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced it will award the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Maria Corina Machado instead of Donald Trump, the White House said the US president will continue to make peace deals, end wars and save lives. “President Trump will continue to make peace, end wars, and save lives,” the White House communications director wrote on Twitter. He has a humanitarian heart, and there will be no one like him who can move mountains with his strong will. However, the White House took a dig at the Nobel Committee, saying they chose politics over peace.

Donald Trump has not yet responded to Maria Corina Machado’s Nobel win. However, the US president has supported the democracy movement of Machado and his allies in the past. In January this year, when Machado was briefly detained during anti-government protests against Nicolas Maduro in Caracas, Venezuela, Trump had sought his safety. The Venezuelan opposition, as well as the US, had reportedly said that Maduro had stolen the 2024 presidential election, and argued that Edumundo González, supported by Machado, was the real winner.
