Birth and family
Karambir Singh was born on 03 November 1959 in Jalandhar, Punjab. His family was also associated with the Indian Army tradition. Due to which Karambir Singh also got inspiration to serve the country since childhood. He completed his early education from Barnes School, Deolali. Then he took admission in NDA and along with studies, he kept preparing himself physically and mentally. At the National Defense Academy, Karambir Singh did military exercises and gained leadership experience. Through hard work and dedication he got a major in the 56th course.
Commission in Indian Navy
Admiral Karambir Singh was commissioned into the Indian Navy in July 1980. Early in his career, Karambir Singh qualified as a pilot and then gained experience on various helicopters such as the HAL Chetak, Kamov Ka-25 and Ka-28. In his initial appointments, he served as the Commanding Officer of the Indian Coast Guard Patrol Vessel ICGS Chand Bibi and her class of Corvette INS Vijaydurg. After this Karambir Singh took command of the missile destroyer INS Rana. During this period he conducted many important operations.
Karambir Singh’s experience played an important role in taking him to the highest command of the Navy. After promotion to flag rank, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command. In this role, Karambir Singh led the Tri-Service Unified Command in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On 31 October 2017, Karambir Singh was appointed to the post of Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Eastern Naval Command.
24th Chief of the Indian Navy
Then on 23 March 2019, Karambir Singh was appointed the 24th Chief of the Indian Navy. During his tenure, he has worked to strengthen operational and strategic defense cooperation and maritime security. He took many initiatives towards modernizing the Indian Navy. Due to which the Indian Navy emerged as a major power. Karambir Singh retired on 30 November 2021.
