He said- It is a matter of good fortune for me to take oath of CJI post on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima on 14 May.
He said- CJI Sanjeev Khanna was not in the country during the Pahalgam terror attack, so I called a complete court with permission from him. It was announced to keep a two -minute silence in the court to pay tribute to the victims of the attack.
Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna is retiring on 13 May. He officially recommended the name of Justice BR Gawai as his successor. On 29 April, the President approved Gawai’s name. He will become the 52nd CJI of the country by taking oath on 14 May.

War not good for any country
Justice Gawai said- war is not good for any country. As a citizen of this country, we are all concerned equally about this whole situation. We should work to solve it. Now the ceasefire has occurred, this is a good step. When there is war, a lot of price has to be paid.
On the misuse of social media, he said- I do not follow social media, but I also believe that justis cannot sit in his homes and give decisions. We have to understand the issues of the common man.
CJI enhances its successor’s name
The tradition is that the current CJI recommends the name of his successor only when he is urged to do so.
Justice Gavai is named in the seniority list after CJI Khanna. Therefore, Justice Khanna has taken his name forward. However, his term will be only 7 months.
According to a profile on the Supreme Court website, Justice Gavai was promoted as Supreme Court judges on 24 May 2019. His retirement date is 23 November 2025.

The other Dalit CJI would be Justice Gawai, Demonetisation was correct
Justice Gawai will be the second Dalit CJI of the country. Before him, Justice KG Balakrishnan became the Chief Justice of India. Justice Balakrishnan became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 2007.
Justice Gawai has been included in many historical decisions as the Supreme Court judge. These include the Modi government’s 2016 demonetisation decision to upheld and declare the election bond scheme unconstitutional.
Justice Suryakant falls in the seniority list after Justice Gavai. It is likely that he will be made the 53rd Chief Justice.

In Gujarat, it was said- If people are removed, people will start adopting justice of the crowd
Justice Gawai attended the annual conference of judicial officers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on 19 October. He then said that while in office and praising a politician or bureaucrat of the judge outside the purview of etiquette, people may affect the trust of the entire judiciary.
The resignation of a judge to contest elections can affect people’s perception about fairness. Judicial ethics and honesty are the basic pillars that maintain the reliability of the legal system. It is necessary to maintain public confidence in the judiciary. If the trust is low, they will find justice outside the judicial system.
People can adopt methods like corruption, mob justice for justice. This can cause loss of law and order in the society.
