Justice Gawai was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019.

Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gawai will take oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India today. The term of the current CJI Sanjeev Khanna has ended on 13 May. Today, President Draupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to Justice Gawai.

Justice Gavai was named in the seniority list after CJI Khanna. So Justice Khanna took his name forward. However, his term is only 7 months old.

According to a profile on the Supreme Court website, Justice Gavai was promoted as Supreme Court judges on 24 May 2019. His retirement date is 23 November 2025.

Justice Gawai started a legal career in 1985

Justice Gawai was born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra. He started a legal career in 1985. In 1987, he started independent practice in the Bombay High Court. Earlier, he worked with former Advocate General and High Court Judge Late King S Bhonsle.

Advocated in the Bombay High Court from 1987 to 1990. From August 1992 to July 1993, the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court was appointed as Assistant Government Prosecutors and Additional Public Prosecutors. On 14 November 2003, promoted as Additional Judge of Bombay High Court. On 12 November 2005, he became a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court.

The other Dalit CJI would be Justice Gawai, Demonetisation was correct

Justice Gawai will be the second Dalit CJI of the country. Before him, Justice KG Balakrishnan became the Chief Justice of India. Justice Balakrishnan became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 2007.

Justice Gawai has been included in many historical decisions as the Supreme Court judge. These include the Modi government’s 2016 demonetisation decision to upheld and declare the election bond scheme unconstitutional.

Justice Suryakant falls in the seniority list after Justice Gavai. It is likely that he will be made the 53rd Chief Justice.
