India’s Attorney General R Venkatarmani reached Parliament House for a JPC meeting on the ‘one election’ bill.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) held on ‘Ek Desh-Election’ met on Tuesday. In this, Attorney General R Venkatramani, former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court DN Patel, JPC member Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and others attended others.
According to sources, Attorney General Venkatramani told JPC- there is no need for any amendment in the proposed laws. The Bills to hold elections simultaneously do not affect any feature of the Constitution. These are correct from the point of view of law.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned-

Can countries like Sweden and Belgium be compared to a country like India. All the things related to holding elections together are only claims. Because no study has been done.
However, opposition parties described the ‘one country-one election’ as a violation of the constitution. Keep its negative aspects in front of the panel.

CJ said before Delhi High Court- Election together good initiative
Former Delhi High Court CJD DN Patel also discussed its challenges along with positive aspects of the ‘Ek Desh Ek Election’ proposal. He said that this will help in better governance in the long term. There will be better assessment of political parties. The cost of the election will be low.
However, he also talked about the concern of administration, concern on regional issues with possible impact on the freedom of the state in the challenges faced by the proposals. Also mentioned constitutional obstacles required to amend some articles.
He said that the term of some assemblies can be extended to hold state elections with Lok Sabha elections.
Venkataramani said- I am not the government, but the Attorney General of India
Sources said that Venkataramani told the members that he is the Attorney General of India, not of the central government. So do not think that I will support the opinion of the central government in this matter. He said that he would respond to the questions sent to me.
BJP MP and JPC President PP Chaudhary said that holding elections simultaneously is in the interest of the country. The committee is discussing the best ways to implement it. The opinion from legal experts will help the committee to prepare its recommendations.

What is one country-one election… There are elections for Lok Sabha and state assemblies at different times in India. One country-one election means holding elections of Lok Sabha and state assemblies simultaneously. That is, voters will vote on the same day, at the same time to choose members of Lok Sabha and State Assembly.
The Lok Sabha and Assembly elections were held simultaneously in 1952, 1957, 1962 and 1967 after independence, but in 1968 and 1969 several assemblies were dissolved prematurely. The Lok Sabha was also dissolved in December 1970. Because of this, the tradition of one country-one election was broken.
