Hallmarking on gold jewelry has been openly opposed by jewelers in protest of the unique ID i.e. HUID. Today, jewelers across the country are on a one-day strike.
Jewelry says Hallmark is OK but HUID is not accepted in any form. The National Task Force of Jewelers said in a statement that Jewelers (Jewelers) will be in the country on Monday, August 23, 2021. Hall marking process Symbols will go on strike against the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in protest of its arbitrary implementation.
HUID means hallmark unique identity. This is a 6 digit alphanumeric code that is applied to each piece of jewelry to make it unique. Just as every person in India has a different Aadhaar number, so does every piece of jewelery have a HUID. From June 16, the sale of Hallmark jewelery was made mandatory in 256 districts of the country.
