According to NHK’s Sunday report, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is planning to resign before the voting on the issue of holding the leadership elections by the ruling party. Ishiba’s resignation will be less than a year after he became Prime Minister, while his tenure has been full of many electoral setbacks. Recently, after the ruling coalition had no majority in any House of Parliament after the defeat in the elections held in July, Ishiba was under pressure to step down for several weeks from within his own party.

Ishiba took over last October and promised to improve the party along with dealing with inflation. LDP has been involved in many political funds raising scams.Shortly after assuming power, LDP and its coalition partner Comento lost their majority in the lower house elections. The ruling coalition was also missed by a majority in the election of the upper house in July.In the midst of increasing demands from Ishiba to take responsibility for the election results, the LDP was expected to decide on Monday to hold special leadership elections.

Pressure on Ishiba increased after elections held in July

The Prime Minister had no option left for resigning due to the increasing demands of internal criticism and accountability that lasted for weeks.The NHK did not clarify when Ishiba would formally step down, but his departure is expected to create a new leadership conflict within the party as Japan is facing political uncertainty.
