Meet Jaishankar Rubio amidst tension with America

Amidst a comprehensive order of US President Donald Trump to impose a fee of $ 1,00,000 on H-1B visa, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday for bilateral discussion with the start of the high-level 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This will be a first face-to-face meeting between Rubio and Jaishankar after Trump imposed an additional 25 percent tariff for the purchase of Russian oil on India, which will make the total fees levied by Trump White House to 50 percent. According to the daily program released by the State Department on Sunday, Rubio will meet Jaishankar in New York City on Monday morning.

What is on the agenda?

He met for a meeting of quad foreign ministers at Washington DC last time in July. This bilateral meeting is being held on the same day India and America will discuss a trade agreement as soon as possible. A delegation led by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will meet the US side in the city on Monday.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement, “The delegation is planning to pursue the discussion with the aim of finalizing the mutually beneficial trade agreement as soon as possible.” The statement further stated that on September 16, during the previous visit to the team of officers of the United States Trade Representative Office, there was a positive discussion on various aspects of the trade agreement and it was decided to intensify the efforts in this regard.

Jaishankar reached New York on Sunday for the high -level United Nations General Assembly week, where he started his program with a bilateral meeting with Foreign Secretary Theresa P. Lazaro, Foreign Secretary of the Philippines. The Foreign Minister said on X, “We discussed the recent India visit of President @Bongbongmarcos. He also discussed our cooperation in the United Nations and the Indo-Pacific region.”

Lazaro said that he was happy to meet Jaishankar again after President Bongbong Marcos’ “successful” state visit in August. He said, “Today’s discussion confirms the commitment of both our countries to develop actively cooperation in political, defense and security, maritime sector etc. as strategic partners.”

Jaishankar will hold several bilateral and multilateral meetings during the high-level United Nations General Assembly session this week and will give a national statement on 27 September in a general debate from the prestigious green United Nations General Assembly forum.
