‘It’s okay if a man does it, but there’s an uproar if a woman asks for it?’ Deepika Padukone exposed Bollywood, lashed out at the ‘hypocrisy’ of the industry!

Actress Deepika Padukone has broken her silence after the controversy over her demand for 8-hour shifts after leaving Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Spirit’ and Nag Ashwin’s ‘Kalki 2’. Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Deepika explained how “male superstars” have been doing 8-hour shifts for years, but it “never made headlines.”

In this interview, Deepika gave her reaction when she was told that she was facing a lot of opposition for her decision. She said, “Being a woman, if it sounds like pressure or something, so be it. But it is no secret that many superstars in the Indian film industry, male superstars, have been working eight-hour days for years, and it has never been in the limelight.”

In a recent conversation with CNBC-TV18, Deepika Padukone broke her silence on the ongoing debate in the industry. He said, ‘I have done this at many levels, this is nothing new for me. I guess I’ve had to deal with everything I’ve got, even things like payment. I don’t know what to call it, but I always fight my battles quietly and for some strange reason, sometimes they become public. This is not my way. Nor was I brought up that way. But yes, raising my voice for myself and fighting my battle quietly and with dignity is my way.

 

Deepika’s exit from the sequel of ‘Spirit’ and ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ creates stir

Deepika Padukone had set a condition of working in eight-hour shifts for the sequels of ‘Spirit’ and ‘Kalki 2898 AD’. It is reported that after the birth of her daughter Dua Padukone Singh, she had made this demand to the producers, which was rejected and Deepika left both the films.

Now, in a recent interview, Deepika has talked about this in detail. Additionally, he also mentioned the ongoing discussions in the industry where equality, justice and respect are discussed.

Giving the example of male actors, Deepika Padukone said, ‘Being a woman, if it feels like pressure or something, then so be it. But it’s no secret that many superstars, male superstars, have been working eight-hour days in the Indian film industry. They have been doing this for years. It never made headlines.’

The actress further said, ‘I don’t want to take the name, because it can become a big issue. But it is a well-known fact that many male actors work for eight hours. Some work eight-hour days from Monday to Friday and do not work on weekends.’

Reddit users were seen fully supporting the actress. One user wrote, ‘She is absolutely right. How many times have we heard about male superstars arriving very late to the sets. At the same time, people like to pretend that their criticism of their demands has nothing to do with misogyny, but is clearly rooted in misogyny.’

Govinda, Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, all of them were also infamous for this. So this has been happening for decades. Plus, she is a new mother and has a valid reason for demanding fair working hours compared to these superstars.”

And it’s good for everyone to set boundaries for their work-life balance, work 9 to 5 and take weekends off.” Another comment read, “Akshay doesn’t work on Sundays. Ajay also avoids working on Sundays. Akshay works very early morning shifts and usually finishes work by 5 pm. He doesn’t like late night shooting at all and avoids it. Directors solve this problem by shooting at night instead of during the day. Salman comes when he feels like it, and then the producers give him a chance.”
