The Supreme Court of Israel said on Sunday that the Israeli government did not even give food to Palestinian prisoners properly, and ordered the government to provide adequate and quality food to these prisoners.
The decision was pronounced on a petition filed last year by the human rights institution called ‘Association for Civil Rights in Israel’ and ‘Gisha’. It is rarely seen that during the Israel-Hamas War that has been released for 23 months, the Supreme Court has questioned the government’s decisions in this way.
A bench of three judges of the Supreme Court unanimously ruled, saying that it was the legal responsibility of the Israeli government to provide food to Palestinian prisoners three times a day to ensure “basic standard of living”. The court ordered the authorities to fulfill this responsibility.
The court admitted that the government did not deliberately provide enough food to the Palestinian prisoners in jails, causing them to face malnutrition and starvation during the Israel-Hamas War.
The judgment said, “We are not talking about comfortable life or any kind of facility here, but are just talking about the things that are necessary according to the law to stay alive. We should not treat our worst enemies as well. ”
The Israeli army has arrested a large number of Palestinians in Gaza and occupied West Bank on suspicion of terrorist relations. Thousands of these people were kept in camps and jails without any charges for months and were later released.
These people said that the situation was very bad during custody – the place was very small, did not get enough food, treatment was not done properly, and diseases like scabies were spread.
Two human rights organizations described it as a planned policy of the Israeli government. According to Palestinian officials, at least 61 Palestinians have died in captivity since the war started. In March, a 17 -year -old Palestinian boy died in Israeli jail, after which doctors said that the main cause of death could be starvation.
