Thousands of Palestinians returned to northern Gaza on Friday after the US-brokered ceasefire agreement came into force. With this agreement, hopes for an end to the war between Israel and Hamas have increased. All the remaining hostages will be released by Hamas within a few days. Despite the agreement, questions remain as to who will rule Gaza after the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops and whether Hamas will surrender its arms in accordance with US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire plan.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unilaterally ended the ceasefire agreement in March. He also indicated this time that if Hamas does not lay down its arms, Israel may resume attacks. The war began with an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 people were taken hostage. Israel’s retaliatory military strike killed thousands of Palestinians, devastated Gaza and thrown global politics into turmoil.

More than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed and about 170,000 wounded in Gaza, according to Gaza’s health ministry. The remaining 48 hostages will be released by Monday, with about 20 expected to survive. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday that in the next phase, Hamas will be disarmed and Gaza will be demilitarized. He said Hamas agreed to the deal “when it felt that the sword was still hanging on its neck.” An Israeli security official said the army would control about 50 percent of Gaza.
