Following the decision of French President Emmanuel Macron to recognize Palestine as an independent nation, other Western countries also took similar steps, which is resentment in Israel and its associates America.
The decision brought two-nation solutions once again to the center of diplomatic efforts to end the devastating war in Gaza. In a letter to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week, President Macron wrote, “Our resolutions to give their nation to the Palestinian people are related to the belief that permanent peace is compulsory for the safety of Israel.”
Macron said, “France’s diplomatic efforts have originated from our resentment over that horrific human disaster in Gaza, which cannot be justified.” Israel on Friday declared Gaza’s largest city as a war zone. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 63,000 Palestinians have been killed so far in the war that began on 7 October 2023 with an attack on Israel.
France, Britain, Canada, Australia and Malta have said that they will formalize their resolve to recognize Palestine as an independent nation during the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly starting on 23 September.
Some other countries including New Zealand, Finland and Portugal are also considering similar steps. Netanyahu has rejected the status of Palestinian nation and is planning to increase military operations in Gaza. Israel and America say that recognizing the nation of Palestinians encourages extremists.
