Indian origin booming in America! Mamdani becomes New York mayor, Purewell shines in Cincinnati, many cities get new mayors

Elections for the post of Mayor were held on Tuesday in major cities of many states of America in which people participated enthusiastically and elected their favorite leader, but the most interesting contest was seen in the election for the post of Mayor of New York City in which Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani created history by winning. He has become the first South Asian and Muslim person to hold the post of mayor of America’s largest city.

Mamdani won the election for mayor of New York City by receiving 948,202 votes (50.6 percent), a turnout of 83 percent. He had been the frontrunner in the New York City mayoral race for months and on Tuesday he defeated Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa and veteran politician and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was running as an independent candidate. Cuomo had received the support of US President Donald Trump on the eve of the election.

Cuomo received 776,547 votes (41.3 percent) while Sliwa received 137,030 votes. His campaign team had said, “Zohran Mamdani is running for mayor to lower the cost of living for working-class New Yorkers.” Mamdani, a youth leader, received strong support among youth and working-class New Yorkers who are burdened by inflation and job insecurity amid the difficult economic and political environment in the country.

Indian-born Mamdani is the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani. He was born in Kampala, Uganda, and moved with his family to New York City at the age of seven. Mamdani became an American citizen only in 2018.

Elections were also held on Tuesday for the post of Mayor of Cincinnati city of Ohio in which Democrat Aftab Purewell defeated Republican candidate Corey Bowman and retained his dominance on this post. Corey Bowman is the half-brother of US Vice President J.D. Vance.

Purevel was elected mayor for the first time in 2021. He won the all-party municipal primary in May with more than 80 percent of the vote. Before contesting the election for the post of Mayor, he had served as a lawyer.

Elections were also held on Tuesday for the post of Mayor of Atlanta, the capital of Georgia state, in which Andre Dickens has won. This is his second victory on the post of mayor. The Atlanta mayor’s office has been held by Democrats for decades. Dickens won the post with more than 50 percent of the vote, defeating three rivals.

Before taking office in 2022, Dickens served on the Atlanta City Council and as the chief development officer of a technology-based nonprofit. Democrat Corey O’Connor has won the election for mayor of Pittsburgh city of Pennsylvania state.

O’Connor won the election for mayor of Pittsburgh on Tuesday, defeating Republican candidate Tony Moreno. Allegheny County Comptroller O’Connor defeated incumbent Mayor Ed Gainey in the Democratic primary earlier this year. He is the son of former Pittsburgh mayor Bob O’Connor.

At the same time, Mary Sheffield has been elected the first female mayor of Detroit city of Michigan state. City Council President Mary Sheffield will be Detroit’s new mayor and the first woman to lead the city. Sheffield defeated popular megachurch pastor the Rev. Solomon Kinloch def. She will take office in January and replace three-time mayor Mike Duggan, who announced last year that he would not seek re-election.
