Dialogue on Indo-US Trade Agreement: US President Donald Trump’s business advisor Peter Navarro continued his attack on India over tariffs and trade agreements on Monday, saying that India has ‘most tariffs’. Navaro’s comment has come at a time when Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have described the Indo-US relations as important.
Prior to the trade talks between Indian and American officials in the capital Delhi, White House business advisor Peter Navaro has said that India is ‘coming to the table of negotiation’. He once again reiterated that India charges the highest fees compared to major countries of the world. His remarks came before the day-long dialogue on the proposed Indo-US bilateral trade agreement of Brendon Lynch, the chief negotiator of the Donald Trump administration.

In an interview to ‘CNBC’ on Monday, Navaro said, “India is coming to the table of dialogue … the Maharaja of the fee.” He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted a ‘very cordial, good, creative’. Whatever they do in India, the President (Donald) Trump has reacted to him. Last week, Prime Minister Modi said that India and America are natural partners and teams from both sides are working to finalize talks on bilateral trade agreement. His social media post came in response to Trump’s comment in which he said that efforts are on to remove ‘trade obstacles’ between the two countries.

Navaro said, “We will see how it works. But practically, we know that their fees on the trade front are the highest compared to any larger country. Their non-fee barriers are very high. We had to deal with it as we are dealing with every other country that does this. ”Navaro, who has often been targeting India for the purchase of Russian crude oil, said that the country had not bought such a supply before the attack on Ukraine in 2022. “Soon after the attack, Indian refiners got mixed up with Russian refiners … This is ‘madness’ because they earn money from us in unfair business.”
He claimed and said that American employees are affected by it. Navaro said, “Then they use that money to buy Russian oil, and then Russians to buy weapons from it, and then we have to pay more to protect Ukraine as taxpayers. So how can this happen? ”India and America have affected relations after Trump doubled the fee on Indian goods to 50 percent.
The US has imposed an additional 25 percent fee for the purchase of Russian crude oil on India. India described the US move as ‘inappropriate and indispensable’. While defending the purchase of Russian crude oil, India has been saying that its energy purchase is inspired by national interest and market dynamics.
