The World Bank reported in its ‘Power and Equity Brief’ report that India has been successful in reducing poverty in the last decade. According to the report-India took out 17.1 crore people living in extreme poverty between 2011-12 and 2022-23.
The number of people living at less than Rs 172 per day was reduced from 16.2% in 2011-12 to 2.3% in 2022-23. With this, 17.1 crore people have come above the poverty line.
According to the report, extreme poverty in villages declined from 18.4% to 2.8%, while in urban areas it declined from 10.7% to 1.1%. The rural-urban gap declined from 7.7% to 1.7%. This is a 16% decline annually.
India joined low-middle income countries After the decline in poverty data, India has now come into the category of low-middle income countries. Here those who earn less than about 292 rupees per day are considered to be in lower-middle class power. On this basis, 61.8% of the people were in poverty in 2011-12, while in 2022-23 it declined to 28.1%. During this time 37.8 crore people managed to get out of poverty.
Improvement in poverty has been assessed on the basis of norms like better education, health and lifestyle.
