Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday started his two -day visit to India to hold talks with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on the border issue. Wang’s visit is taking place a few days before China’s proposed visit to attend the annual summit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The Ministry of External Affairs (Mea) has confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New Delhi on Tuesday evening. This is Wang’s first visit to India in three years and is taking place amidst the new efforts by the two countries to normalize stressful relations.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday told his Chinese counterpart Wang Ji that India and China should adopt a clear and creative approach to pursue relations that are based on mutual respect, sensitivity and mutual interests. In his initial comments at the meeting with Wang, the Foreign Minister insisted on furthering the process of reducing tension in the border areas near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in East Ladakh. The region has been dead for more than four years between the forces of the two countries.
Sources said that before the meeting, China has agreed to India’s concerns over the restrictions imposed by Beijing on the supply of rare soil minerals, fertilizers and tunnel digging machines to New Delhi. This meeting will be held at 5.30 pm on the Prime Minister’s Housing – 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. China’s Foreign Ministry quoted Wang in a statement as saying that with the growth of “unilateral Dadagiri” globally, Beijing and New Delhi should work together to promote multiproofing. He further stated that the two countries should see each other not as “rival or danger, but partners and opportunities”.
The dialogue is taking place a few days before the planned visit to China for Modi’s annual Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, where his President Xi Jinping is expected to meet. If this is confirmed, it will be Modi’s first visit to China in seven years.
The relationship between the two Asian powers deteriorated after the deadly clashes in the Galwan Valley in 2020, but recent indications indicate a softening. According to Bloomberg, Beijing has relaxed the ban on urea exports, New Delhi has restored tourist visa for Chinese citizens, and Indian companies are exploring technical partnership with Chinese companies.
Wang’s visit is also taking place in the backdrop of increasing stress in Indo-US relations, when President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent and imposed an additional 25 percent fine on the purchase of Russian oil.
