For the first time after becoming the head coach of the Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir was ‘hooted’ by a group of fans at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday who were upset with the 408-run defeat to South Africa in the second Test. Gambhir took over this post in 2024.
Angered by the defeat, angry fans in one of the stands started chanting ‘Gambhir, woe, go back’. Then these slogans started resonating loudly inside the stadium. The coach looked towards the gallery for a while, then turned his face away and did not react. Immediately the attention of the players also went towards this.
The attention of many members of the playing XI was also drawn to the crowd by their slogans and they were staring at the commotion. Then fast bowler Mohammad Siraj signaled the crowd to remain calm.
Soon after, Siraj and assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak went to the gallery and appealed for peace to these sports lovers. The anger of the supporters was clearly visible. During Gambhir’s tenure, the Indian team has lost five Tests on its own soil.
