India’s legend Sunil Gavaskar scored a century and double century in an innings against the West Indies in 1971. He scored 124 in the first innings and 220 runs in the second innings. Gill has become an Indian batsman to score a double century and century in a match after 54 years. Gill scored 269 runs in the first innings of Edgbaston Test and scored 100 runs in the second innings.
Earlier, Gill was also the Indian batting to score the highest score on the land of England during the first innings. He defeated Sunil Gavaskar who scored 221 runs at the Oval in 1979. Gill, who scored 147 runs in his debut match as a Test captain in Leeds, completed his first double century in traditional format by taking a run at Deep fine leg off the Josh tank.
