Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be discussed about the future in ODI cricket, but their selection for the three -match ODI series starting in Perth from October 19 is scheduled, although some changes will have to be made in the Indian team in view of the charge management.
The selectors will select the ODI team during the ongoing Test against the West Indies but the announcement may be after the match. Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant will not be available due to injuries while Shubman Gill, who plays the Asia Cup and his two Test series within three days, also needs a break. In such a situation, they can be rested with ODI or T20 or both.
Rohit and Kohli have not played international cricket since the Champions Trophy in March and have worked hard in the last seven months. Apart from a century against Pakistan, Kohli scored the most runs in the semi -finals against Australia. At the same time, Rohit played a winning innings against New Zealand in the final. There is also no reason to remove Rohit from captaincy as he has been very successful in this format. If he wants to leave the captaincy to focus on batting himself, then the matter is different.
Both have retired from Tests and ODIs and only play ODI cricket. Given the ODI World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2027, his future will also be discussed. According to BCCI sources, only six ODIs are to be played in this session in which three will be in India and three against New Zealand, so concrete decisions cannot be taken in a hurry.
Currently, priority will have to take the maximum marks of the World Test Championship from the T20 World Cup to be held in India next year and the domestic Test in 2025. Kohli and Rohit’s stay in the team has also been indicated by the promo of the broadcaster Jio Hotstar for the ODI series, in which the portraits of these two are shown. Talking about Bumrah, his world champion is needed in both Tests against South Africa, even if the medical team or themselves decide not to play Delhi Test against Bumrah West Indies, which is still unclear.
Ajit Agarkar, head of the selection committee, said that Bumrah himself expressed his desire to play both Tests against the West Indies. After playing the Asia Cup and now two Tests, the next Test series is three weeks later and then the T20 series before the T20 World Cup. In such a situation, a break can be given from the tour of Australia to protect Bumrah from excessive journey. Pandya will not fit till the ODI series and in such a situation Nitish Kumar Reddy may get a chance. The second option is Shivam Dubey but his bowling is not tested in the Australian situation.
