Amid the ongoing controversy over a shopkeeper attacking a shopkeeper by MNS, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde ended his speech with Jai Gujarat on Friday after chanting the slogan of Jai Maharashtra. Speaking at an event in Pune, Shinde praised Home Minister Amit Shah and concluded his speech with slogans like Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra, Jai Gujarat. Shinde’s remarks were strongly criticized by the opposition and NCP (SP) leader Clide Cresto targeted the Deputy Chief Minister and accused him of greedy of power.

But Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis defended Shinde. Fadnavis told reporters just because Shinde said ‘Jai Gujarat’, it does not mean that Shinde loves Gujarat more than Maharashtra. Such narrow thinking does not suit Marathi people. The slogan dispute occurred even after the viral video in which Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers were shown beating shopkeepers in Mumbai as they were allegedly refusing to talk in Marathi.

Fadnavis, while answering questions asked about this, said that Marathi should be respected, but no one will be tolerated. The Chief Minister also said during a press conference that hooliganism will not be tolerated in the name of Marathi. Fadnavis also reminded that when the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was unveiled in Chikodi, Karnataka, Sharad Pawar also called ‘Jai Maharashtra, Jai Karnataka’ from the stage. He asked whether this means that Sharad Pawar has more love than Karnataka and less than Maharashtra?
