In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a mob beat Nepali woman on suspicion of theft, four accused arrested

A Nepali woman was allegedly beaten up by a mob in search of a job in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. The police gave this information on Sunday. Police said that a woman named Sushmita Saru Magar alias Kajal, a resident of Pokhara district of Nepal, has been admitted to the hospital in critical condition.

According to the police, the woman was at the house of Vinay Gangwar, an acquaintance in Baradari. On Saturday night, when talking on the phone at around one o’clock on the roof, some people considered him a thief. Officials of the fort police station said that people made noise, saw it in the light of the flashlight and chased him.

He said that fearing he tried to open the roof door, when he could not do so, he jumped from the roof in panic and fell to the ground. Officials said that the mob then beat him with sticks.

A video of the incident has surfaced on social media, in which the woman is seen pleading with folded hands and saying again and again, I am not a thief, but the crowd kept attacking her.

Senior Superintendent of Police (City) Manush Pareek said that a case has been registered on the basis of video and victim’s complaint and four accused Gaurav Saxena, Shivam Saxena, Aman Saxena and Arun Saini have been arrested. He said that efforts are on to identify and arrest the remaining accused.

The victim told the police that she used to work in Noida, but she was missed and she came to Bareilly through an acquaintance in search of work. According to the police, the woman said that her two teeth broke and leg injuries during the attack. The police have assured to take strict action against those who attacked.
