Based on a report by the Dhaka Tribune, the press secretary of the Chief Advisor, Shafiqul Alam, said that the decision to cancel the instructions after a meeting of the Advisory Council in Dhaka was finalized. The press secretary wrote on Facebook that during the nearly 16 -year -long autocratic rule of Sheikh Hasina, a directive was allegedly issued, under which public authorities needed to address him as ‘Sir’.
Bangladesh has officially quashed the Sheikh Hasina government’s rule under which it was mandatory for government officials to address the former Prime Minister and other senior women officials as “Sir”. According to the official notice issued by the Yunus -led Interim government, this instruction has been canceled due to its “unfair” nature. Based on a report by the Dhaka Tribune, the press secretary of the Chief Advisor, Shafiqul Alam, said that the decision to cancel the instructions after a meeting of the Advisory Council in Dhaka was finalized. He further said that this practice is also spread to other highly placed women officers, which were earlier called ‘sir’ and are still called, which is clearly strange. Along with the “Sir” order, the Advisory Council has also abolished other “old” instructions and protocol rules. After finishing the order to say “sir”, the Interim government has said that it will form a review committee to consider the “proper” way to address senior officials and public servants. The review committee will be headed by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, who is currently advisor to energy, road, railway, environment and water resources affairs.

The use of the word head has been criticized for many years for women officials. The interim government has resolved to work in the direction of a more respectable and appropriate word that is in line with the social norms and values of Bangladesh.
