The Kolkata Police has formed a 9 -member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged rape case in the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kolkata. The main accused in the case, Mahavir Toppanwar alias Parmanand Jain, has been sent to 7 days police custody till July 19 on July 19.
Accused arrested, police sought remand
According to Kolkata Police, ‘DC Southwest Division has formed a 9 -member special investigation team to investigate the case.’ According to a PTI report, the accused was arrested on Saturday after a female clinical psychologist lodged an FIR at Haridevpur police station. Kolkata Police Chief Prosecutor Sorin Ghoshal said, “We demanded police custody, and the accused demanded bail.” He argued that this happened with consent. We argued that it is not so, prima facie investigation shows that the crime was committed, and medical evidence supports the victim. The court provided police custody till 19 July.

The victim’s father denied rape charges
However, a new turn in the case came when the alleged victim’s father rejected the allegations of ‘rape’. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, he claimed that his daughter had suffered injuries in an accident. He said, “I received a call from my daughter at around 9.40 pm on Friday night. She told that she has fallen from a vehicle and suffered injuries. Later, I came to know that she has been admitted to SSKM Hospital. Based on the information received from my daughter, the police is claiming, nothing.”

Hostel was called for counseling
According to the police complaint, the woman was called by the accused for counseling, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Alipur Court sent the accused to police custody after hearing both sides. The matter is now being taken even more seriously with the formation of SIT, while the victim’s father’s claims have made the case complicated.
