External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar gave a sharp reply to America and Europe regarding India’s oil trade with Russia. Responding to the recent allegations of Trump administration in the Economic Times World Leaders Forum 2025, Jaishankar said that if you have any problem in buying oil or refined products from India, do not buy it. Nobody forces you to buy it. He further said that it is ridiculous that people working for a business-supporter American administration are accusing others of doing business. People talk among themselves. It is not that there is a ‘kutti’ … as far as we are concerned, the red line is mainly associated with the interests of our farmers and our small producers.

The Ministry of External Affairs also said that India is not alone to buy Russian oil. China, the European Union and other countries also have similar relations, which have not been punished. Jaishankar argued that the US was adopting a selective and biased policy, and said that China remains the biggest buyer of Russian oil, yet it has not faced such business actions. He asked that we are not the biggest buyers. Others are also doing this. Then why do we?

He reiterated that India’s purchase is in line with the practices and needs of the global market. He also said that the US had earlier encouraged India to help stabilizing global energy markets including purchasing from Russia. These sharp comments have come after Trump’s big steps of imposing 50% tariffs, targeting India’s growing energy trade with Russia, including 25% additional fine. India, condemning the decision, described it as “unfair, inappropriate and indispensable” and emphasized its sovereign right to take independent economic decisions in the national interest.
