I resigned before going to jail … What did the Congress MP say that Amit Shah got angry

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Wednesday that the allegations against him were false, but he resigned from his post before going to jail and followed constitutional principles. His remarks came in response to a question asked by Congress leader KC Venugopal regarding his arrest in the Lok Sabha during the monsoon session of Parliament. The exchange took place immediately after Amit Shah introduced three bills in the lower house, including the Constitution (one hundred and thirty-thirty amendment) Bill, 2025.

The bill provides for the removal of the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers facing allegations of corruption or serious crime, if they remain in custody for 30 consecutive days. He also introduced the Union Government Government (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The bill proposes to amend Section 54 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019, so that provision can be made to remove the Chief Minister or Minister in the event of arrest or detention in serious criminal charges. Amid the uproar, Congress MP KC Venugopal asked, “Can I ask a question to the Home Minister? When he was the Home Minister of Gujarat, he was arrested….”

Amit Shah reacted sharply and said that now listen to me, I want to clear all the records. I was made false allegations. I resigned before arrest due to moral responsibility. And I did not take any position until the court acquitted me. In July 2010, the then Minister of State for Home Affairs Amit Shah was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the alleged fake encounter case of gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kausar B and colleague Tulsiram Prajapati. The agency had accused him of a conspiracy, citing phone records and other evidence.

Before the arrest, Shah resigned from his ministerial post. The same year he was later kept in judicial custody in Sabarmati Jail before getting bail. In December 2014, a special CBI court acquitted him of all allegations, citing the lack of evidence.
