I am in Assam, if you want to send to jail … Maulana Mahmood Madani’s retaliation on Assam CM’s comment

Maulana Mahmood Madni, President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, today expressed deep concern over the recent actions of the government in Assam while addressing a packed press conference at Hotel RKD in Guwahati. He said that these steps are not only inhuman, but also a violation of the instructions of the Supreme Court. Referring to his visit to many affected areas, he said that I saw disappointment and helplessness on people’s faces with my own eyes. The most painful thing is not just sabotage, but insult, an entire community is being called with derogatory words like ‘Mian’ and ‘suspicious’. Maulana Madani made it clear that if a foreigner is found here, it should be deported. We have no sympathy with illegal migrants. But Indian citizens who have been evicted should be rehabilitated. Where eviction is unavoidable, the guidelines of the Supreme Court should be followed with basic human sensations.

Referring to the Chief Minister’s remarks that he will send Madni to Bangladesh, the Jamiat President said I have been in Assam since yesterday. If he wants, he can send me. But if such a threat can be given to someone whose ancestors have endured imprisonment six times in the freedom struggle, then what will happen to the common Muslims? On the Chief Minister’s claim that he is “not afraid”, Madni said, he is the head of a state, what does he need to fear? I am just a common citizen, ‘zero’ in his words, yet I also need no need to be afraid. The real issue is that there is no place in this country for those who hate and enmity. The civilization of India is thousands of years old. Whoever defames it, has no right to live here. It would be better for such people to go to Pakistan.

While answering a question about the damage done to the names (community prayer sites), he stressed that both Namghar and Masjid are integral part of the cultural heritage of Assam: “Assam has always been the center of various traditions coined by personalities like Shankar Dev and Azan Fakir. If the name is not damaged, then the safety of both will not be safe.
