Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday recalled the contribution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Hyderabad liberation day and after independence appreciated the iron-rich will of the country’s first Home Minister in making Hyderabad a part of the Indian Union. Addressing a public meeting in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, Prime Minister Modi said that today, September 17 is another historic day. On this day, the nation saw Sardar Patel’s iron-dominated will. The Indian Army liberated Hyderabad, protected its rights and restored India’s pride. He said, “Hyderabad liberation day inspires us. Maa Bharati ki Aan, Ban and Glory is nothing more than pride.”

Targeting the opposition indirectly, he said that the celebration of this achievement was not celebrated for decades. The Prime Minister said that decades passed, but no one celebrated this achievement. But our government made this incident immortal. We started celebrating this day as Hyderabad liberation day. Today, this liberation day is being celebrated with pride in Hyderabad. The then Hyderabad state was merged with the Indian Union in 1948. Accordingly, on 17 September, the national flag will be hoisted in all government offices, urban local bodies and gram panchayats.

In 2023, the then BRS government decided to celebrate 17 September as National Unity Day. However, the Central Government decided to celebrate it as Hyderabad Mukti Day, and the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a Gazette notification to this effect. After a “police action” under Operation Polo, Hyderabad merged with the Indian Union on 17 September, 1948. Some people call it freedom from Nizam rule, while some call it a merger in the Indian Union. Earlier today, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh hoisted the national flag at the parade ground in Secunderabad on the occasion.
