The central government will submit a proposal in the Supreme Court on Wednesday regarding how pollution will reduce pollution in Delhi-NCR.

In view of the pollution situation in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court on 9 April directed the Center to propose by April 30 how electric vehicles (EVs) would be adopted in government departments.

A bench of Supreme Court Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan had asked Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Aishwarya Bhati to put the proposal before the court by the end of April. ASG Aishwarya Bhati advocated on behalf of the government.

ASG had told- more than 60 lakh old vehicles in Delhi During the April 9 hearing, ASG Aishwarya Bhati had told the court that more than 60 lakh vehicles are running in Delhi, which have crossed the fixed age limit. At the same time, the number of such trains in the NCR region is close to 25 lakhs.

The court expressed concern over this, saying, ‘ASG has raised the presence of a large number of old trains in Delhi and NCR. We will issue guidelines on this when we take a final decision on the issue of pollution caused by vehicles.

SC instructions- Complete remote sensing studies in 3 months The Supreme Court had also directed the Center to complete the study within 3 months on the use of remote sensing technology. This technique is considered important for monitoring pollution caused by road moving vehicles.

The government had sought 10 to 12 months time to complete this study, but the court made it clear that it would not be accepted so long.

Government had told- Fastag is causing trouble ASG Bhati said that vehicles were earlier monitored at the toll plaza, but now the vehicles go out without stopping due to the fastag. This has made it difficult to collect data. For the first time, the proposal to use remote sensing technology was proposed by the Environmental Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority in 2019, which advises the Supreme Court in environmental matters.
