The Supreme Court has asked eight states to file replies on petitions that have demanded a ban on their laws related to religious changes. A bench led by Chief Justice BR Gavai was hearing petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the religious change laws of UP, MP, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand and Karnataka.

The bench gave the states 4 weeks to file a reply and said that the next hearing will be 6 weeks later. Senior advocate Chander Uday Singh (on behalf of Citizens for Justice and Peace) said that immediate hearing of the case is necessary, as the states are making these laws more strict. He said that in fact they limit the religious freedom of minorities.
