Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has recently strongly condemned Raj Thackeray’s attack on a shopkeeper in Thane by members of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). He described the incident as a case of hooliganism in the name of language and promised strict legal action. Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Fadnavis gave a strict message that it is not wrong to proud of Marathi language in Maharashtra. But if someone does hooliganism due to language, we will not tolerate it. If someone beats people on the basis of language, it will not be tolerated. Fadnavis confirmed that the police had taken action by registering an FIR and warned of strict consequences when such incidents happened again.

The Chief Minister said that we are proud of our Marathi, but we have to keep in mind that injustice cannot be done in this way with any language of India. And sometimes I am surprised that these people embrace English and create controversy over Hindi. What is this thinking and what kind of action is this? Therefore, strict action will be taken against those who take the law in their hands.

The incident came to light after a video went viral on 1 July, showing MNS workers clapping and attacking the owner of a sweet shop, as he allegedly refused to talk in Marathi. In the disturbing footage, three people are seen entering the shop and asking the shopkeeper about his language choice. When he was asked why he was not speaking Marathi, the shopkeeper replied peacefully. I did not know that it was mandatory to speak Marathi. Someone has to teach me. Then one of them warned him, will kill him? After which he carried out violent attack. The attackers slapped the shopkeeper several times, abused and threatened to close his business. When the shopkeeper replied that all languages in Maharashtra were spoken, the anger of the attackers got angry.
