Mizoram is preparing for a historic milestone as the Bairabi-Garg railway line is almost complete, which will make the state capital Aizawl on the National Railway Map of India for the first time. The 51.38 km long project aims to change connectivity, reduce travel time and open new opportunities for the people of the state. This line has passed through some of the most challenging areas of the Northeast. Engineers have constructed 142 bridges along with 48 tunnels more than 12 kilometers longer, including both large and small structures.

Of these, the height of bridge number 196 is 104 meters, which makes it higher than the prestigious Qutub Minar in Delhi. It makes it the highest bridge of this section and the second tallest bridge in Indian Railways. The project also includes five road overbridges and six road underpasses to ensure uninterrupted transport integration. The progress of the project is notable, about 95 percent of the physical work has already been completed and 97 percent of the amount has been used. A successful test was conducted by the Northeast Frontier Railway in May 2025, after which security inspection was done in June.
The Railway Safety Commissioner has approved the line for passenger operations and the trains are allowed to run at a speed of up to 90 kmph. Once operational, the new route will reduce the journey of Guwahati-Izol from a 14–18-hour road journey to about 12 hours by train. Benefits are far beyond travel facility – rapid access is expected to promote business, tourism, education, healthcare and employment, as well as strategic connectivity in the border state will be strengthened.

The project will be formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 September 2025, which will be a historical moment in the modern history of Mizoram. Public Relations Officer (NFR) Nilanjam Dev said that Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone in 2014 and the project was completed within 10 years. In addition, Mizoram has become the fourth northeast state to directly connect with the Indian Railway Network. The newly constructed sairang railway station located just 12 km from Eisol, two platforms, three tracks and modern facilities will serve as the railway entrance to the capital.
