The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday deferred hearing on the petition challenging the decision to merge primary schools across the state by the Uttar Pradesh government till Thursday.
A bench of Justice Pankaj Bhatia passed the order on a petition filed by Krishna Kumari and 50 others. The petitioners have challenged the decision of the Basic Education Department issued on June 16, which provides for merging primary schools to upper primary or composite schools on the basis of student enrollment numbers.
The petition has argued that this decision of the government violates the provisions of the right to children’s free and compulsory education act. It has been argued in the petition that as a result of the merger, primary schools will go away for young children, which has a strong apprehension to be deprived of education.
