Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who has been sentenced to death in the case of murder of a local citizen in Yemen in 2017, has been postponed. Sources gave this information on Tuesday. Earlier this hanging was to be held on 16 July. Allegedly these continuous efforts played an important role in postponing the punishment. Sources said that the Ministry of External Affairs (Mea) has been involved in this matter since the beginning and has been providing all possible help.
Priya sentenced to death in 2020
The 38 -year -old Priya hails from Kollangode in Palakkad district of Kerala. He was convicted of killing a Yemeni citizen in July 2017. A Yemen’s court sentenced him to death in 2020. His appeal against this decision was rejected by the country’s Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023.

Huti control Sana lodged in jail
He is currently lodged in a prison in Sana, the capital of Yemen, under the control of Iran -backed Houthi Officers. According to sources, in recent times, the Government of India has made concrete diplomatic efforts to Priya’s family to find a solution with the victim’s family by mutual consent. Despite the sensitive and complex nature of the case, Indian officials are in regular contact with both local jail authorities and Yemen’s prosecutor office.
How did Yemen go?
Nimisha Priya is a trained nurse from Palakkad in Kerala, who went to Yemen for work in 2008. Got a job in a government hospital in Sana and returned to India for marriage in 2011 and married Tommy Thomas. After the birth of the daughter, the husband returned to India, while Nimisha decided to open a private clinic in Yemen. As part of the rules, he needed a local partner, for which he met Mahdi. During this time, Yemen was in the grip of civil war, but Nimisha decided not to come back to India and stay there. According to family members, Mahdi tampered with Nimisha’s pictures and called her a wife and seized the passport and started harassing her. Later Mahdi died and alleged that Nimisha killed him by injection of unconsciousness. She is now facing a death sentence in Yemen’s jail.
