Haryana IPS officer ‘suicide’ case: Chief Minister Saini assures justice to the family

In his first public comment on the case involving “suicide” of an IPS officer in Haryana, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday assured the family members of the deceased that they will get justice.

Y Puran Kumar, a 52-year-old 2001 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, allegedly shot himself at his residence in Sector-11 here on Tuesday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Haryana is facing criticism from the opposition over the alleged suicide of an officer. The opposition is demanding an independent investigation into the officer’s death.

Addressing a gathering of BJP workers in Panchkula, Saini said Kumar’s family members have told him that they want justice. “I have said that we will investigate the matter and whoever is found guilty will definitely take action against him, no matter how big a person he is,” the Chief Minister said.

Saini said he had spoken to the deceased’s wife, Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Amneet P Kumar. “We are also in touch with the Center to resolve this issue,” he said.

Saini asked opposition parties not to do politics on this issue. “If the family of the deceased feels injustice has been done to them, we will ensure justice,” he said. The family will get justice.

Describing the death of the IPS as unfortunate, Saini said that after receiving information about Puran’s death, he had asked two officers to accompany Amneet when he returned to India from Japan. Amneet Kumar was part of a delegation led by Saini on a three-day visit to Japan when her husband allegedly shot himself in Chandigarh.

Amneet has alleged that her husband’s death was the result of “systematic harassment” by high-ranking officials. After returning from Japan, Saini met Amneet Kumar here and expressed his condolences.
