Governor List: Maharashtra was one of the 12 states to get a new governor as President Draupadi Murmu made important constitutional appointments this morning. The President also appointed a new Lieutenant Governor for the Union Territory of Ladakh.
1. Former Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais will replace Bhagat Singh Koshyari as the Governor of Maharashtra. Koshyari’s exit from the Raj Bhavan was welcomed by opposition leaders who accused him of hurting Marathi sentiment with his controversial remarks on icons.
2. Eighty-year-old Koshyari had told Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month that he wanted to step down. A Raj Bhavan statement said, “Governor Koshyari has expressed his desire to spend the rest of his life in reading, writing and other leisurely activities.”
3. An RSS veteran who has served as a chief minister and an MP in both houses of parliament, Koshyari was appointed governor in 2019. During his tenure, he hit the headlines several times with the Uddhav Thackeray government and his controversial statements.
4. The Uddhav Thackeray-led government and the Raj Bhavan clashed over a number of issues, including the reopening of temples after the Covid pandemic, the denial of a state aircraft for Mr Koshyari’s visit to Dehradun and a special assembly after the rape and murder of a woman. Lt Gen Kaivalya Trivikram Parnaik (Retd) will take over as Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Laxman Prasad Acharya as Governor of Sikkim, CP Radhakrishnan as Governor of Jharkhand and Shiv Pratap Shukla as Governor of Himachal Pradesh. Shiv Pratap Shukla is a former Union Minister and an influential Brahmin leader from Uttar Pradesh.
9. Also, Gulab Chand Kataria has been appointed as the governor of Assam, former Supreme Court judge Justice S Abdul Nazeer as the governor of Andhra Pradesh, Biswa Bhushan Harichandan as the governor of Chhattisgarh and Anusuiya Uikey as the governor of Manipur.
10. Kataria, a sitting MLA with strong RSS connections, was a prime contender for the chief minister’s post ahead of this year’s Rajasthan elections. His appointment can be seen as a deliberate move to sideline him from the big race. Another important appointment is that of Justice Nazeer, who was part of the five-judge constitution bench that delivered a unanimous verdict in the Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi case in 2019.
