After years of raging in Pakistan, the jihadi terrorist group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is now seen to be recruiting and spreading in Bangladesh as well. TTP activities in Bangladesh, which share more than 4,000 km long border with India, may be a matter of concern for New Delhi. The incident took place at a time when Malaysia detained 36 Bangladeshi citizens in June on charges of alleged relations with terrorist networks. TTP is mainly active in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. There are reports of increase in TTP activities at a time when domestic jihadi groups are being promoted in Bangladesh after the fall of Sheikh Hasina regime in August 2024.

According to Dhaka-based The Daily Star, in July, Bangladesh’s Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) arrested two persons, Shamin Mahfuz and Mohammad Foysal, on charges of alleged relations with TTP. According to the newspaper, Bangladeshi officials are focusing on controlling the danger through campaigns conducted on the basis of intelligence information. The ATU established by Bangladesh Police in 2017 targets such dangers using advanced intelligence strategies. These arrests were taken after a report published in May by Bangladeshi Digital Outlet, The Decent, which revealed that at least eight Bangladeshi citizens are currently active as TTP members in Afghanistan. One of them was allegedly killed by the Pakistani Army in April, although the news of his death came in Bangladeshi media in July itself.
