Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickramasinghe was given a bail after being nominated as suspects in an ongoing investigation into alleged misuse of government money for a private foreign trip to ten persons on Tuesday. According to the Sri Lankan newspaper Daily Mirror, Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura released him on three bails of 50 lakh Sri Lankan rupees (each), whose next court hearing will be held on October 29. He was arrested on alleged allegations of misuse of government funds of 1.66 crore Sri Lankan rupees.

Earlier on Friday, Ranil Wickramasinghe was arrested on charges of misuse of government money, according to a newswire Lanka report on Friday. According to Newswire, his arrest is associated with allegations of using government money to meet the expenses of a private visit to London, where he attended a university graduate ceremony. It was also reported that investigators claim that the journey, which was part of a broad foreign tour, was not an official program, but was funded by government money.
After remand, he was initially placed in a jail hospital due to alleged health problems, but was later transferred to the national hospital after further medical examination. Earlier on Monday, the Daily Mirror had reported that the former Sri Lankan president would not be able to appear in the court on Tuesday due to poor health. It said that Wickramasinghe was to be presented to the Colombo Fort Magistrate on Tuesday.

However, hospital officials said that due to their current health condition, they would not be able to appear in court on Tuesday. Quoting a senior official at the Colombo National Hospital (CNH), Daily Mirror said that the former Sri Lankan President has been advised to take medicines and rest for the next three days. It was told that on the previous day he had a problem of dehydration, which increased his heart rate. Symptoms such as increase in kidney parameters and headaches were also found in medical tests.
