Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik dies, RML breathed his last breath

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik died on Tuesday at the age of 79 after prolonged illness. Today at around 1 pm, he died at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi, where he was undergoing treatment. Malik served as the 10th and final governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019 and the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was abolished on 5 August 2019 during his tenure.

Later, he moved to Goa and became the 18th Governor and also served as the 21st Governor of Meghalaya by October 2022. His first major term as a politician was as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly during 1974-77. He represented Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1986 and 1986-89. He was a member of the Ninth Lok Sabha from Aligarh as a member of the Janata Dal from 1989 to 1991. He was the Governor of Bihar from October 2017 to August 2018. On 21 March 2018, he was also given additional charge of working as the Governor of Odisha till 28 May 2018. In August 2018, he was appointed as the Governor of the State of Jammu and Kashmir.

Malik was born in a Jat family in Hisavada village in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. He graduated science from Meerut University and a degree in LLB. In 1968–69, Malik was elected the student union president, which led to his political life. Malik was first elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly from Baghpat for a public office, when he successfully contested as a member of Charan Singh’s Indian revolution party.
