Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy caught in Libya campaign case, 5 years in jail

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to a five -year prison on Thursday, when a Paris court found him guilty of conspiring for illegal electoral financing with Libya. Sarkozy, who has always denied these allegations, was accused of making an electoral financing deal with Gaddafi in exchange for supporting the then isolated Libyan government on the international stage.

The judge, who acquitted Sarkozy from other allegations including corruption, said that there is no evidence that Sarkozy had made such a deal with Gaddafi, nor that the money sent from Libya reached Sarkozy’s election campaign fund. Sarcosy’s punishment means whether they appeal or not, they have to go to jail. The judge also ordered Sarcozie to pay a fine of 100,000 euros.
