Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro’s 27-year prison sentence begins

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro began his 27-year prison sentence on Tuesday. Bolsonaro was found guilty of plotting a coup to remain in power after losing the 2022 presidential election.

Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is hearing the case, ordered that Bolsonaro be held at the same federal police headquarters where he had been since his arrest on suspicion of fleeing the country. Earlier, Bolsonaro (70) was under house arrest since August.

The former president and several of his associates were convicted of plotting a coup, planning the assassination of President Lula da Silva and the Vice President, and their role in the uprising that broke out in 2023.

He was also found guilty of charges of leading an armed criminal organization and violently subverting the democratic system. Two other convicts, Augusto Heleno and Paulo Sérgio Nogheira, were sent to a military centre. Former Interior Minister Anderson Torres is being held in Papuda prison in Brasília. Bolsonaro is the first former Brazilian president to be convicted of an attempted coup.
