The carmaker said in a statement that the production of vehicles for sale in India would stop immediately and about 4,000 workers would be affected. Ford will shut down an assembly plant in Gujarat in the fourth quarter, as well as a vehicle and engine manufacturing plant in Chennai by the second quarter of next year.
Anurag Mehrotra, Managing Director, Ford India, said: “We have not been able to find a sustainable way forward for long-term profitability, including vehicle manufacturing in the country.”
