The new book of physical education of Class 7 of the National Council of Educational Research and Training i.e. NCERT ‘Sports Yatra’ includes indigenous games of various states. With this, students will now be able to learn traditional games and activities related to Indian culture.
NCERT has decided to make these changes according to the requirement of National Education Policy i.e. NEP 2020.
Unit 1 includes 3 traditional sports of Maharashtra and South India

One of these is ‘Ghorpadache Shapoot’ i.e. the tail of the lizard. The game is played between two teams, in which the players of each team stand in one line and hold the back of the front player. The leader of one team tries to touch the last player (tail) of the second team, without being caught himself.
The book also mentions Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare, who used ‘Ghorpad’ (lizard) to win the fort. It is said that Tanaji climbed the Sinhagarh Fort at night with the help of his pet monitor Lijard. He tied the rope with the lizard and climbed the fort.
Another sport in Maharashtra is ‘Gidhada Gudhkavan’ or ‘Hawk and Chick’. The game is popular in rural areas and shows the race between an eagle and chickens. It promotes agility, teamwork and strategy. In the book, it has been described as a sharp playing game, which has been played for many generations.

‘Aat-pata’ is a running game in which the runners have to cross the lines in the court, the better. Defenders try to tag them. It is also called ‘Dariya Bandha’ and in the book it is described as a game of agility and strategy.
The book also includes a traditional wrestling game of North-East tribal communities ‘Dapo Nyarka Sunam’. In this, two players compete using a bamboo stick. Both players try to push each other out of the cycle (shells) by holding the bamboo stick. This game teaches strength, technology and strategy.
‘Madhu and Manu’ is a tag game in which two teams try to reach their respective safety zones, without tags.
Units 3 and 4 of the book have the basic principles of badminton and football, while Pranayama is also described with units 5 and 6 kabaddi, yoga and asanas.
