Fear of heavy rains in Odisha, 18 district high alert, government tightens back

The Odisha government has placed 18 districts on high alert after a warning of heavy rains due to a new low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal (IMD) of heavy rains. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Devaranjan Kumar Singh has issued instructions to the district collectors through a video conference and requested to be ready for any emergency.

Possibility of faster of the weather system

According to Manorama Mohanty, director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Center, the following pressure system developed at 5:30 pm on Thursday evening under the influence of upper air cyclonic circulation. By the evening of 26 September, it is expected to convert to a darkest and reach the banks of South Odisha-Uttari Andhra Pradesh on the morning of 27 September.

District on the most alert

Koraput and Malkangiri districts are expected to receive heavy rains, while other districts of South Odisha are also expected to receive heavy rains. District collectors of Koraput, Malkangiri and Navrangpur have canceled all government employees’ holidays and have directed them not to get out of their stations. Collectors of Raigad, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Balasore and Nuapada have also been instructed to be fully prepared.

Emergency forces deployed

Officers have been directed to deploy the Odisha Disaster Access Force (ODRAF) and firefighter service teams in sensitive areas. SRC Singh assured the public that the government is keeping a close watch on the situation and there is no need to panic with the people.
