Mansa : Disturbed by low prices, farmers have thrown capsicum on the road. Farmers are getting Rs 1 per kg of Shimla pepper. While in the opposite market people are getting 50 to 60 rupees per kilo.

Farmers say that due to such low rate of capsicum, their expenses are not being met. They are also having to cut vegetables from time to time. Saddened by this and defeated, they have decided to throw their vegetables on the streets.

Gora Singh Bhaini Bagha, state senior vice president of Punjab Kisan Union, said that this time the hands of the farmers who cultivate capsicum have stood up. He said that capsicum was cultivated by taking expensive seeds under agricultural diversification, but due to low prices, they have to throw them on the roads.

The farmer leader said that the situation at Mansa is that the farmers are getting a rate of one rupee to three rupees. Due to such bad situation, the farmers are now on their hands. Farmers will not dare to cultivate vegetables further. They will turn to traditional crops again.

The Punjab Kisan Union demands that the government take the hand of the vegetable growers and arrange marketing. Arrangements should be made to send vegetables to foreign states. He said that subsidy should be given on transportation through trains and subsidy should be given on seeds and polythene.

Cultivation of capsicum at village Bhaini Bagha

Capsicum is cultivated on a large scale at village Bhaini Bhagha. Farmer Jagdev Singh, a capsicum grower at the village, said that this time traders are buying capsicum at two to three rupees per kg, while last year it was at the rate of Rs 20 per kg.

Mansa: Capsicum is being bought for 2 to 4 rupees per kg from farmers, the price is 50-60 in the market.

On the other hand, another farmer, Harvinder Singh, says that due to the government’s slogan of crop improvement, he had planted wheat and paddy. But vegetable farming has left them reeling. They are forced to throw it on the streets as the expenses are not met. Farmers have demanded from the government that vegetables should be marketed like wheat and paddy. There should be government procurement of vegetables by fixing the MSP.
