Mumbai: Actress Dia Mirza, who played the role of Reena in the film ‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’, established her identity across the country with this film. Dia, who has been active in the film industry for the last 23 years, will be seen in director Anubhav Sinha’s film ‘Bheed’ as a mother who is unable to meet her child due to the lockdown.
Diya told in an exclusive conversation with Navbharat that the situation of her character in this film, which was shot in the condition of lockdown, was similar to her real life as she had to stay away from her son for the shooting. Here are some excerpts from this conversation…
You are making a comeback in Hindi cinema after almost 3 years, what was it about the film that attracted you?
Firstly, it was a great opportunity to work with a seasoned director like Anubhav Sinha. They always present such stories with which the audience connects. As an artist, I am always impressed by such stories which reflect the truth. I have known Anubhav for almost 23 years. I have always wanted to work with him. Political social drama films are rare and there are very few Asian directors who can truly convey these types of stories. I had worked with him in ‘Thappad’ and that’s when I told him that I want to be a part of his every project.

You have been active in the film industry for 23 years now, have your criteria for choosing films changed?
I always want to work on stories that touch me from within. I love working on films based on issues of women empowerment. I am very interested in films that tell stories that strengthen our society. When I played Manyata Dutt in ‘Sanju’, I felt that this character is very strong.
How challenging has the lockdown period been for you, how did you spend your time during that time?
I was very lucky that I was safe at home. I was with my mother and after 20 years I spent so much time with her. There were many people in our building whose age was more than 80 years. Bringing them food and taking care of them, I kept myself busy with these things. Many times I used to go to the house of an old lady living in my neighborhood and clean her house because she was unable to do so. The scene we were seeing outside shook me. During the second lockdown my son was born and he was in the NICU due to which I could only see him once a week. Those times were very difficult. It was very sad to say that many people did not even get a respectful last farewell.
Despite being in the industry, you never got lost in the glare here, maintained your simplicity, any important reason for this?
That’s because I’ve always worked with real people, not fake ones. Being associated with social work, I also work with people who are working hard on issues like education and environmental protection. Through this I realized that I am not different from people. The simpler the life the better and this is the essence of life. Due to being associated with social work, I understood the truth of life closely and due to this I have become better-behaved.
‘Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein’ is your identity, if a sequel to this film is made, would you agree to it?
Everyone would like to know what happened next with Maddy (R Madhavan’s character) and Reena (Diya’s character). As of now there is no lineup of romantic films, but if such an opportunity comes, I will definitely consider it.
