The Council of the European Union has announced that two years after the military coup that was staged in Myanmar/Burma, the authorities have decided to adopt restrictive measures on nine individuals and seven entities.
According to the Council, the decision to impose restrictive measures was taken in view of the continuing human rights violations, escalation of violence, and threats to the security, stability, and peace in Myanmar/Burma, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
The individuals who have been added to the EU sanctions list include the Minister for Energy, high-ranking officers in the Myanmar armed forces, and prominent businessmen who have supported the repression.
Administrators and politicians from the Yangon Region who have been involved in the process of execution and death sentences of four democracy activists are also part of the EU’s sanction list.
The Council has revealed that the restrictive measures currently apply to 93 people and 18 entities. All people and entities that are part of the EU’s sanctions list are subject to a travel ban. This means that they are prohibited from entering or transiting through the territory of the EU.
Moreover, those designated are also subject to an asset freeze and EU entities and persons are prohibited from making funds available to them.

According to the Council, the restrictive measures that the EU has decided to impose on additional individuals and entities come in addition to the retention of financial assistance from the EU and the freezing of all EU assistance.
Apart from introducing restrictive measures, the Council has stressed once again the EU highly condemns the human rights violations by the Myanmar armed forces.
“Those responsible for the coup, as well as the perpetrators of violence and gross human rights violations, should be held accountable,” the Council stressed.
The same pointed out that the EU reiterated its call for preventative actions and to cease the transfer and sale of arms and other equipment.
The EU also said that all hostiles must stop immediately and stressed that the military authorities must respect international humanitarian law and end the indiscriminate use of force.
