According to data submitted by the states to the Union Ministry of Environment, more than 13,000 sq km of forest area has been encroached in 25 states and union territories, which is more than the total geographical area of ​​Delhi Sikkim and Goa.

In the report submitted to the NGT last week, the Ministry said that by March 2024, a total of 13,05,668.1 hectares (or 13056 sq km) in 25 states and union territories were under encroachment. So far 10 states have not presented data on forest encroachments.

7506.48 sq km was captured last year

Last year, the National Green Tribunal took self -cognizance on a news, citing government figures, it was reported that 7,50,648 hectares (or 7506.48 sq km) in India is under encroachment. Which is five times more than the size of Delhi.
