The election for the post of Vice President will be held on September 9. The Election Commission announced this on Friday. According to the Commission, the notification for the election of the post of Vice President will be released on August 7 and the last date for filing nomination papers will be August 21.
The Commission said that if voting is needed, it will be held on September 9 from 10 am to 5 pm in Room No.101, Vasudha, located on the first floor of Parliament House. Results will be declared on the same day.
The post of Vice President became vacant on 21 July due to resignation by outgoing Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. The Election Commission has appointed Rajya Sabha General Secretary for the Vice Presidential election as Election Officer and two officers of Rajya Sabha Secretariat as Assistant Election Officer.
The electorate for the Vice Presidential elections consists of members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The nominated members of the Rajya Sabha are also eligible to vote in the Vice Presidential elections.
The electorate for the Vice Presidential elections consists of 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha, 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and 543 members of the Lok Sabha. There are five seats in the Rajya Sabha and one seat in the Lok Sabha, which leads to an effective number of electoral college and the winning candidate will require 391 votes, provided all the eligible voters exercise their franchise. The ruling NDA has an edge in the upcoming election.
One of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha is vacant in West Bengal, while the 245 -member Rajya Sabha has five seats vacant. Four of the five vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha are from Jammu and Kashmir and one from Punjab.
In the Lok Sabha, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has 293 out of 542 members. The ruling coalition has the support of 129 members in the Rajya Sabha (effective member number 240), provided that the nominated members should vote in support of the NDA candidate.
The ruling coalition has a total support of a total of 422 members. A person who is elected as Vice President is necessary to be a citizen of India, he should not be less than 35 years of age and should be eligible to be elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
