The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a 7,000 -page charge sheet against Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel in connection with the alleged liquor scam. Chaitanya’s judicial custody ended today as the charge sheet was filed and he was produced in court. Chaitanya was arrested from his residence in Bhilai on his birthday on 18 July and has been in custody since then.

According to the ED, Chaitanya Baghel is suspected to be a “recipient” of money received from the alcohol scam of Rs 2,160 crore alleged during the tenure of the Congress government led by Bhupesh Baghel between 2019 and 2022. The agency alleges that he received Rs 16.70 crore from the income of the scam, which he invested in his real estate projects. Meanwhile, the Economic Offenses Branch (EOW) has also issued a production warrant demanding a seven -day remand for detaining and questioning them. The special court has reserved its decision on the case and the hearing will be held on Tuesday.

In addition, the petition filed in the High Court against Chaitanya’s arrest is to be heard on 19 September. The arrest took place after a raid by central agencies in July. According to the ED, this action was initiated after getting new evidence in the case. Chaitanya Baghel will be taken from the court to the ED office for further questioning. Earlier in March, the agency raided several campuses associated with them and seized about Rs 30 lakh cash, electronic equipment and documents.
