The scumjet engine tested in the new facility of DRDO in Hyderabad.

DRDO on Friday achieved a big place in hypersonic weapon technology. Hyderabad’s Defense Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) conducted a ground test of active cooled scamjet subscale combuster for more than 1,000 seconds. This test was conducted at DRDO’s State of Art Advance Center (Scramjet Connect Test Facility).

Earlier in January 2025, the same engine had a successful 120 second test. Now after this 1,000 second test, this system is considered ready for full-scale flight.

Missile testing on April 24 from INS Surat

The Navy tested the missile from INS Surat on 24 March. The Navy destroyed a small target floating in the sea. INS Surat is posted on Daman C face in Surat, Gujarat. This warship is 164 meters long and weighs 7,400 tonnes. Its maximum speed is 30 knots (about 56 km/h). It has state-of-the-art weapons- BrahMos and Barak-8 missile and AI based sensor system.

Defense Minister congratulated DRDO for successful testing

With this test, not only is engine design validation, but the new test facility is also the first major success. The Ministry of Defense has described it as an integrated effort acquired in collaboration with DRDO, industry and academia.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO and all the partners and said that this achievement shows India’s chest to achieve the critical hypersonic technology of India.

DRDO Chairman Dr. Sameer V Kamat associated with DG Missiles U. Raja Babu, DRDL director Dr. GA Srinivas Murthy and congratulated the entire team.

Specialty of hypersonic missile

  • The most important thing about hypersonic missiles is that it is almost impossible to catch them with any radar in the world, including the US due to fast speed, low tragetized flying at low altitude. For this reason, no missile defense system in the world can kill them.
  • Hypersonic missiles are capable of carrying several tons of nuclear weapons. These missiles can carry a 480 kg nuclear weapons or traditional weapons. This missile is considered important for countries with nuclear weapons.
  • Hypersonic missiles are more deadly than subsonic cruise missiles in destroying underground weapons warehouses. According to defense experts, hypersonic missiles are more destroyed due to their high speed.
  • Hypersonic missiles are adept at changing the way in the manual technology. With this, these places can also target the changing targets. It is difficult to avoid them due to this ability.

DRDO has long been working on hypersonic missiles

India has also been engaged in creating hypersonic missiles for many years. In 2020, DRDO successfully tested a hypersonic technology demonstrained vehicle (HSTDV). According to reports, India is moving towards creating its hypersonic cruise missile using HSTDV.

At the same time, India is engaged in the development of BrahMos-II missile in collaboration with Russia, which is a hypersonic missile. The range of BrahMos-II will be up to 1500 km and 7-8 times more than speed sound (about 9000 km/h). It is expected to be tested by 2024.

Apart from these, countries like France, Britain are busy making hypersonic missiles. At the same time, North Korea has also claimed to make a hypersonic missile.
